Perks for the non-prescription

Opinions have been stated, and suggestions have been made. As none are likely to change anything, further arguing is not contributing anything productive to the forum. Let's drop this thread, please.

Then again, it would be unfair for non-prescription backers. Since these prescription people are getting free eyewear and they generally require more effort in production (no matter if every lense is custom made, it will still be easier to make something without specific needs) than people who don't need prescription, they should be at the back of the line. All non-prescription backers should get the glasses first and begin the production as it would be the easier batch to make (1 size fit all) then only move towards the custom backers.

I doubt sending out a pair of dummy glasses will delay the Alphas all that much, since lense production is what's causing the delay. Like Steel, I appreciate the gesture, mainly because it'll give me the opportunity to test out my chosen frame in advance. Of course it's simply meant to assuage our impatience, but it'll serve a worthy purpose nonetheless.

Didn't mean you specifically @SteelTallon. Just the type(mind set) . Tho it is Corey's decision on what to do, just a bummer to learn that time is being wasted on people who could go out, get an exam and 2 pairs of glasses for $65 and just wait for the product just like you and me. Difference is, you think it's a nice gesture, I think it's ridiculous people had the audacity to ask for it.

So, from my "nice gesture" comment, you surmise that I am bugging Corey to give me something for free for making ME wait for an Alpha product, and at the same time making the rest of you wait longer because of my selfishness.

Well sir, I have not asked anything of the sort. I have been waiting patiently, just like everyone else. I was just as surprised by this update as the rest of you.

That's all I'm going to say on this topic, as it's pointless.

The type that expects free things for nothing. We all are waiting for the company to release an alpha version of their product, which if you have ever alpha or beta tested anything, would know delays happen. Instead of leaving the company alone to work on their product and focusing on their task, Corey is dealing with lazy people who don't want to get new glasses.

Did you ever stop to think that maybe more delays have happened because of the company pandering to these people? So the product gets delayed for all? How is that fair?

and what "type" is that? I don't recall at anytime, I asked for anything from Laforge. All I said is it a nice gesture. Honestly, you sound a little butt hurt about the whole thing.

Please take this in the spirit it's intended. It's stupid for laforge to have to give prescription pre-orders free glasses to tide them over. They have insurance, go use it and stop being lazy and waiting for laforge. Even if you don't have insurance, you were getting glasses before, do it again. You will get your updated prescription glasses when the product ships. In the meantime, go get new glasses if you need them.

Unless something is being offered for ALL pre-order customers because of the wait, which is being done with the demo glasses being given on Ex2, laforge shouldn't be responsible for prescription pre-orders. Just my 2 cents.

@Adam, Yes Ex2 is for everyone, once we start it. I wasn't implying otherwise, just that we aren't there yet. I'll see if Corey can jump in here sometime today.

Experiment 2 sounds just as relevant to non-prescription customers - the prism is common to all Alpha glasses, prescription or no... Plus, getting to try out the physical fit will be beneficial to every customer.

Nevertheless, I do hope Corey could at least tell us when can the alpha backers expect to get the glasses. At this point, it felt like it is an indefinite wait since the update stops at 30 is going to be produced for October and there is possibility that the next batch might be next year and so forth (giving away temporary glasses doesn't help either since it imply that the glasses might take a long time to deliver) . Which means Rev 3 may not be out by middle of next year and could be worse, may need to wait another year, which is extremely painful waiting year after year. The tech could be extremely stale by then, bearing in mind that there are many emerging "casual AR glasses" like alpha labs competing.

Yes, that's true for plain, uniform lenses. You can just take a stock of acrylic and slice lenses off akin to chopping vegetables. Each cut is identical, and the material is uniform. In that case, polishing away extra material for a prescription is more work and materials, and costs more.

Not so for Laforge. I don't know our exact production process or formula and wouldn't be able to share it if I did, but that exact reflecting bubble/prism that the image you see is projected onto/through from the corner of the frame is precisely and optimally centered per person. Since our manufacturing is already custom tailored, there's not much more work to add to have prescriptions added. It's relatively quick and easy after the rest of the work that has to go into each lens.

Presumably because we haven't yet started Experiment 2 (where those who opt in get a pair of glasses with the lenses only, and give feedback on how distracting the positioning and shape of the prisms are; Corey mentioned Ex2 in reference to the offer). It's kind of pointless from a consumer viewpoint for those who don't need corrective glasses to order a demo pair at this time, so he didn't even mention it. If he were asked, my assumption is that anyone can take the offer.

I do agree with Ringo Apple that the wording in the update is a bit off, at least if Laforge are offering the free pair of glasses to everyone - they did write "a free pair of prescription eyewear or sunglasses"; intuitively, that wouldn't include non-prescription glasses...

I get the idea of prescription in this case being "free", as the lenses are already being custom-made to each individual, and so off-the-shelf lenses aren't an option.

I don't wear glasses so I might be talking out of my arse but I always thought that prescription glasses cost more to produce than non-prescription glasses. For instance, when I buy my sunglasses, you need to fork out a lot more to get the lens prescribed.

You seem to be operating under a misunderstanding. All of the lenses go through the exact same manufacturing process. If you have non-corrected vision, then in the final stage a prescription of +/-0 is polished onto the outer face of your lenses. It doesn't "save money" to build a Shima for someone without a prescription. The way the lenses are forged with an integral prism set at a particular pupilary distance is unique for each and every order.

The entirely at-will offer stands as is regardless. If you would like a pair of glasses with a prescription of +/-0, you may lock-in your preorder just like anyone else. Other options were not given, and while speculation may give Corey additional ideas, it's his sole prerogative to implement them.
